Septic Pumping
Experience in Septic Systems
Johnson Septic Service has over 15 years of experience pumping septic systems. Our technicians are well trained in septic system operations to best service all your septic needs.
We proudly serve Northwest Indiana Region: La Porte, Marshall, Porter, St. Joseph, Starke, and Lake Counties, and we carry 200 feet of suction hose on our trucks, which means we can service tanks in almost any location. We also offer eco-friendly disposal, as we do not land apply any waste. All waste is treated at a licensed wastewater treatment plant.
Essential Septic Pumping Maintenance
For routine maintenance, we recommend pumping your tank every 1-3 years, based on the size of your household. This will prevent the buildup of sludge and floating scum, and regular inspection will keep your septic system in good working order. We also encourage the use of Bio-Tabs®, which will help to extend the life of your system. Bio-Tabs® are like vitamins for your septic system, full of good bacterias that break down the different types of waste in the septic tank and drain field. Just one dose per month will extend the life of your system!
How Your System Works
Waste flows from the house into the septic tank. Here, most of the solids are separated to the bottom and are partially decomposed by bacteria to form sludge. Some solids float and form a scum layer on top of the water. The liquid effluent (wastewater) from the septic tank is discharged into the soil absorption field. Here the water is further purified by filtration and decomposition by microorganisms in the soil. The purified water then moves to the groundwater system. This is the last line of defense to prevent polluted waste from entering lakes, streams, and groundwater.
Preventing Septic Issues
Septic system failures can be messy and expensive. We’ve compiled some basic information and tips from homeowners with septics so you can keep yours running efficiently and avoid huge repair costs. Read on to learn more about how to prevent common septic issues at your home.
- Pipe from the house to the tank is clogged
Drains drain very slowly (or sometimes stop draining completely) when this occurs. Often, a technician can fix this problem by “snaking the drain” for you.
- Drainfield has failed or is saturated with water
You might see wet, soggy areas near the septic drainfield, or maybe even bright green, spongy grass. This can signal the end of life for this component of your septic system, but it can also signify that you are overdue for a pump. Contact a professional septic services technician (like our team at Johnson Septic Service) to assess the situation.
- Inlet or outlet baffle or effluent filter is blocked or clogged
A blocked inlet baffle is similar to a clogged pipe, and a service professional can fix this quite easily and inexpensively. A clogged outlet baffle may result in sewage backing up into your home, which can be fixed by cleaning or replacing the effluent filter or having the system pumped.
- Increased water usage
More people in the house means more water usage, which can lead to septic tank leaks. For example, in early 2020 when most Hoosiers were staying at home due to coronavirus concerns, emergency septic service calls increased across northwest Indiana.
Signs Your Septic System is Failing
- Bad odors about septic tank or drainfield
- Water and sewage backing up into home from drains and sinks
- Bathtubs, showers, and sinks draining really slowly
- Standing water or damp spots near the septic tank or drainfield
- Gurgling sounds coming from your plumbing system
How You Can Prevent A Septic Failure
- Make sure everyone in your house flushes nothing other than toilet paper. Wipes, diapers, feminine care products and other paper products can quickly lead to a clog or septic failure.
- Make regular maintenance part of your to-do list! Have your system inspected annually. This can help flag potential issues and allow an expert to correct or fix blockages and clogs right away. Also, have septic pumping regularly, every 1-3 years is best.
